#TuesdayTales are stories of people behind a particular brand, people who totally inspire us. This week complementing our edition- ‘Shutterbugs- the click ready collection’ is a fashion brand that has brilliant fashion photography. “Karleo turns dreams into reality.”They share with us the thought process that goes into making the look for their label. Meet Karan and Leon of Karleo.
Here’s a tete-a-tete
1) What was the ideology behind the name Karleo?
Karleo, the label name is extremely personal because we are into the business of making bespoke designs for our clients. Karleo is a combination of Karan and Leon. In other words we are two different people, yet it combines our sensibilities.
2) How did the idea of Karleo strike you?
So, earlier I was into making bespoke shoes, each pair took three months because I made the cast, the mould, colour and design; all bespoke. Personalization was the core principle. Also, I had studied fashion and then I met Leon and he had worked with a lot of international designer brands and had that experience as well. So conversations weaved into plans, and plans into action that materialized.
3) All your collections are mostly India inspired, what is the connection?
We both have extremely diverse thoughts, but we always wanted to have an Indian touch to everything. Our first collected Indian Spices was inspired by the spices of India, the techniques of India, jeweler of India, so we actually gave the dye maker specimens of bay-leaves, mustard, and turmeric to get the exact colours. Then we used hand painting as a technique on the cloth, we studded crystals on the piece so that there is no need of jewelry.
4) How important is photography for Karleo? What are the things that go into such beautiful photography like yours?
Location: Everything had to be in sync hence the location was also chosen as such that we shot in a spice market in Mahim. So were our other collections, Astrology and Mela. We always want to take a step ahead. Hence, for Astrology we created a set pertaining to that and even for Mela, we didn’t want it to be obvious and shoot in a circus or a fun n fair but, we focused on the puppets and their shadow.
Model: Even our model, Mariette was chosen because she has the grace, poise, elegance an Indian girl has and she adapts it very well it is like magic. In all we wanted to give an earthy look, so our primary goal was-India.
Photography: We love working with new photographers every time because it gives the photograph a different angle, a fresh look and a new perspective because at the end of the day it has to be a photographer’s view as well. Hence, we do brain storm, streamline and brief the photographer but we then let the photographer work on their own too. So during Mela’s photo shoot we focused on the puppets’ shadow as it makes a lot of difference in puppetry and hence the photographs were focused on the shadow on the wall and the detailing on the piece.
