“She’s a fiery mess, of passion and rage, she’s sick and tired, of living in a cage. She tore off her arms, so her wings could break free, and flew like a bird, instead of being grounded like a tree.” Jordan Weatherhead, The Naked Truth
It is never too easy to break free until you take the first step, and here’s a story of a girl who did exactly that. Danish, a theatre artist from Mumbai, was born to a lady who worked frantically throughout the day. However, with * Kranti’s help she flourished like never before. Here’s her story
>> Tell us something about yourself and your journey.
My name is Danish Shaikh. I love travelling and making new friends during my journey. I have done 26 shows in different places like New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Recently, I went to America for a play. The play was about social justice, sex workers’ rights, and the lives of people who live in red light areas. I really enjoyed doing the play. I stay at Kranti, and we believe that if we want to change the world, we first have to see the world Therefore, the purpose of going to America was to see other parts of the world. I have also attended a camp called GYV (Global Youth Village). The camp was about leadership and one thing I will carry from there with myself forever is that ‘if we want to be a good leaders we have to become good human beings first.’
>> Let’s talk about your education and your job. What do you do?
I studied until the 11th standard, at New City International College, Navi Mumbai, and stood first in my class there. I couldn’t find my soul in it, or connect at any level. I didn’t want to study half-heartedly, hence I decided to do NIOS. Instead of choosing Commerce or Arts, I was studying Psychology, Sociology, Mass Communication, and Business Management and could explore all my interests. NIOS not only gives me bookish knowledge but it also gives me a chance to connect my learning to real life experiences.
>> What do you really want to become?
Since media plays an important role in social change, I want to become an actress, because it makes me happy and it is very important that one should enjoy what they do. I also want to make an inspirational movie to motivate change in our society. I have done many theatre classes, and I really enjoy performing on stage.
>> What is that one goal you want to achieve in life?
Right now my goal in life is to become an actress and I want others to know me by my work and the kind of acting I do in my films. And when I go to bed I just want to think at the end of the day what are the things that make me happy and be grateful for them. And get satisfaction from my life.
>> What is that one message you’d like to give each girl that would motivate her to break free from any brace?
I want to give one message to everyone (and I believe in this very strongly) and that is that we should do what makes us happy, and all the other good things will follow us.
Since our message from this week’s Independence Day edition is- Write. Doodle. Break free, we asked Danish to either doodle something for us, or write us a message, since she is already flying her way to break free! And here’s what she shared with us—
*Kranti is a wonderful NGO, and it works towards enhancing the upbringing of daughters of sex workers.
