RedPolka.com's window to share notes on fashion, Lifestyle, Designs and also Shopper Marketing
In today’s #TuesdayTale read Saanwari’s story. She is the founder of PoppadumArt, a lifestyle brand that makes all things happy. Let’s make our loved ones super happy this season with our ‘Gifting Special’ collection on Red Polka!
“Ideas with a context have a kind of purity – it all seems to come together and just work. It also drives me mad sometimes, because I end up rejecting a lot of fun-looking ideas, but then our products are what set us apart.” When Saanwari decided to launch PoppadumArt, there was no dearth of beautiful decor products in the market. Like a lot of youngsters, she was living away from home and wanted to do up her own space which reflected her personality. But there was hardly anything in the market she liked. Most of the things felt like it were actually meant for her mum’s house, not her’s! That’s where the idea of PoppadumArt struck her, she wanted to fill the gap with her fun, young, and happy products!
1) How did you come up with such a quirky (crunchy) cool name for your brand- Poppadum Art?
Honestly, there was really none! We were getting into the pop-art space but not really in the Andy Warhol kind of pop art. So it’s actually just our version of Pop-Art!
2) How did Poppadum Art happen to you?
I was passionate about art and craft since childhood. Before PoppadumArt, I worked in advertising for about 5 years. As work started feeling monotonous and I rediscovered my love for glass painting and craft, I decided to take the plunge and try it as a career option. In fact, in the 1st year of business I only did hand – painted glass bottles and frames. It’s been over 4 years and we’ve got a whole range of decor products now with plans to do happy products in other categories too!
3) How do you end up making such cool and fun/happy products at Poppadum Art?
My biggest inspiration really comes from things around me. From popular culture. Ever since I’ve started PoppadumArt I don’t think I look at an object like most people do. In my head everything probably has another purpose. (Yes, I know it sounds a little crazy!) So bulbs become salt and pepper shakers, jeans become mats and kadhais become planters.
4) Suggest 5 gifting options from PoppadumArt for Rakshabandhan?
i) My most favorite product has to be the range of Be Who You Want to Be Mirrors – I believe it’s a really strong idea that cuts across age groups. It’s a really fun product and functional too. The Marge Simpson is a great gift to a sister for Rakhi or the Superman mirror for a brother. After all, Rakshabandhan is all about giving them the superhero status 🙂
ii) Then there are the Foodie Fit Denim Placemats – we’ve just launched these mats and they are my current favorites 🙂
iii) The Write on me Planters make for a great gift. They have a chalkboard area to write a message on or in my case, to remind me what herb I’ve planted in which planter.
iv) The Pot of Bling is one that’s one of our best sellers – a beautiful way to organize jewellery!
v) The Man Tray – since we women have entire drawers (and often take over the boys’ drawers), this tray has enough space for men to empty out their pockets into.
